Etiquettes of Jummah

Etiquettes of Jummah. Friday is the most special day of the week for Muslims. It is obligatory upon every Muslim male who has attained puberty to fulfill his duties of Jumu’ah prayer every Friday. Here’s a starting guide of things to follow before and during Friday and Jumu’ah prayer.

Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah said (ﷺ): “The best day on which the sun rises is Friday (Jumu’ah). On it Adam was created, on it he was admitted to Paradise and on it he was expelled therefrom.”[Sahih-Al-Muslim]

Following are the Etiquettes of Jummah

1) Leave All Other Matters Aside

On this day, Muslims all around the world get ready for Jumu’ah prayers, leaving their businesses and all other social and professional wares aside.

“O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu’ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you if you only knew.”

2) Recite the Quran

A Muslim must make it a common act of his to set time aside to recite the Qur’an every single day. On Fridays, it is better to recite Surah-Al-Kahf.

“Whoever recites Surat al-Kahf on Friday, light shall shine forth for him between the two Fridays.”
– [Ibn Hajar & Talkhis al- Habir]

3) Do Ghusl & Get Ready

In preparation for Jumu’ah prayers, you must perform an obligatory ghusl (purifying bath), and use miswak (if it is available) to clean your mouth and teeth. Taking care of one’s appearance is one of the main etiquettes of attending Jumu’ah prayer. You must make an effort to wear nice, clean, and pleasant-smelling clothes (use perfume) as this is a gathering more valuable than any other in your life.

Abdullah bin Umar narrated that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Anyone of you attending the Friday (prayers) should take a bath.”

Rasulullah (ﷺ) said: “The person who has a bath on Friday, purifies himself as far as possible, applies oil to his hair, applies perfume, leaves for the musjid, when he arrives at the musjid he does not sit down by removing anyone from his place, offers as many nafl salaats as possible, when the imam delivers the khutbah he remains silent – then his sins from the previous jumu’ah till now will be forgiven.”

4) Go to The Mosque Early

You must try to leave for the mosque as early as possible; the sooner you get there, the higher the reward will be.

It is recorded that the Prophet Muhammed (ﷺ) said: “…The person who entered first will receive the reward of sacrificing a camel in the path of Allah, the one who followed him will get the reward of sacrificing a cow, thereafter a chicken, thereafter the reward of giving an egg as charity in the path of Allah….”

– [Sahih-Al-Bukhari & Sahih-Al-Muslim]

5) The Khutbah and Etiquettes of Jumu’ah Prayer

It is important that one sits quietly and listens attentively to the sermon by the Imam. He must not let his mind wander away, or engage in thoughts relating to the outside world. The importance of this can be gathered from the beginning and end of the previously mentioned Hadith:

“When it is a Friday, the angels stand at the gate of the mosque and keep on writing the names of the persons coming to the mosque in succession according to their arrivals…”

“…once the khutbah commences, the angels close the register and begin listening to the khutbah.”

-[Sahih-Al-Bukhari and Sahih-Al-Muslim]
Furthermore, another previously mentioned Hadith states:

“…when the imam delivers the khutbah he remains silent – then his sins from the previous Jumu’ah till now will be forgiven.”

It will be best to leave your mobile phone switched off, to avoid the temptation to fiddle with it while in the Masjid.

6) Make Lots of Dua

Making Dua and Zikr all day through the day of Jumu’ah, from the time that the sun goes down on Thursday to the same time the next day.

“There is no day more virtuous than Friday. There is such an hour in this day that no Muslim will make Dua in it except that his Dua will be accepted. And he does not seek protection from anything except that Allah Ta’ala will grant him protection.”

7) A Few Other Sunnahs to Be Followed on The Day of Jumu’ah

1. Trim nails and hair in preparation for Jumu’ah, preferably by Thursday night.

2. Walk to the mosque, if possible, unhurriedly and peacefully. Each step gives one the reward of a year’s worth of Nafl fasts.

3. At the mosque, one should try to sit as close to the Imam as possible. But if he arrives late, he must not inconvenience those that are already there. Instead, he must join in wherever there is space.
