In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.  All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Some Muslims, especially women, think that, in Islam, women are inferior to men. However, Islam considers men and women as equals, though not similar or identical. It is not correct to depict Islamic Shari’ah as gender-biased. A reflection of Islamic teachings and values makes it clear that Islam considers both men and women as equals. Men and women in Islam enjoy equal rights and bear the same responsibilities. Though Islam considers the different physical and even psychological natures of men and women, it secures fair and equal treatment for both genders.

Men have a different nature than women. Therefore, Islam considers the different natures of both genders in a way that secures the well-being of both men and women. According to Islam, men and women complement each other. There are some differences between the roles of men and women in society, but these differences do not make one gender superior and the other inferior. For example, women are exempted from praying and fasting during their menses for health and other significant reasons. Women enjoy equal financial, social, and devotional rights as men. Please read what the Qur’an and the Sunnah say on this subject:

QUR’AN  {O people, We have created you from a male and a female and made you into groups and tribes so that you may know each other. Indeed the noblest of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you.}(Al-Hujuraat 49:13)

Some people misinterpret the verse 34 of surat An-Nisaa’, in which Allah Almighty says: {Men are the managers of the affairs of women because Allah has made some to excel the other.}

The aforementioned verse is not about the absolute excellence of all men overall women. It is talking only about the family organization where the husband has the responsibility to take care of his wife and children. It is not saying that every man is a caretaker of every woman. Secondly, the verse is not about the spiritual, moral or intellectual excellence of husband over his wife. It is talking about his physical strength and capabilities, because of which he must protect his family and must be the provider for his wife and children. Given the above, it is clear that being male or female has nothing to do with superiority or inferiority. Indeed, history is full of women who set great examples of nobility and righteousness. Some of these examples are appreciated and commemorated in the Quran itself.

SUNNAH The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Verily, women are the twin halves of men”. (Abu Dawud)

In conclusion, I request my brothers to fear Allah and do not treat your women in an inferior way due to some cultural practices and I, also, request my sisters not to feel inferior but do not also try to be the head of the household by controlling the men of your household, because Allah has made men as head of the household and he’ll be questioned about his responsibilities. Please live your lives within the boundaries which Allah has made.
