Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Month (of) Ramadhaan (is) that was revealed therein the Quran, a Guidance for mankind and clear proofs of [the] Guidance and the Criterion. So whoever witnesses among you the month, then he should fast in it, and whoever is sick or on a journey then prescribed number (should from days other. Intends Allah for you [the] ease and not intends for you [the] hardship, so that you complete the prescribed period and that you magnify Allah for [what] He guided you so that you may (be) grateful.. [ Surat al-Baqara 2: 185 ].
This month has been ranked above other months for four reasons:
One: There is a night in this month that is better than other nights of the year. That is – Lailatul Kwadar or the night of Kwadar. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “ Verily! We have sent it (this Qur’an) down in the night of Al-Qadr (Decree). And what will make you know what the night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is?. The night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months (i.e. worshipping Allah in that night is better than worshipping Him a thousand months, i.e. 83 years and 4 months). Therein descend the angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] by Allah’s Permission with all Decrees,Peace! (All that night, there is Peace and Goodness from Allah to His believing slaves) until the appearance of dawn. [ Surat al-Qadr 97: 1-5 ]
So worshiping on this night is better than worshiping on a thousand nights.
Two: The best book has been revealed to the greatest prophet on this night. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “The month of Ramadaan is the month in which the Qur’an was revealed; The source of guidance for mankind, as a clear indication of the difference between guidance and true falsehood. [ Surah Al-Baqara 2: 185 ]
Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “By the manifest Book (this Qur’an) that makes things clear,. We sent it (this Qur’an) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan,, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments . Amran (i.e. a Command or this Qur’an or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers) [ Surah Ad-Dukhan 44: 3-5 ]
Narrated Osela bin Aska: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: The books of Ibraaheem (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) were revealed on the first night of Ramadaan. The Torah was revealed on the sixth day of the month of Ramadan. The Injil was revealed on the 13th day of the month of Ramadan. The psalm was revealed on the 17th day of the month of Ramadan. The Qur’an was revealed on the 24th day of the month of Ramadan. “[In Tabarani’s Al-Mujamul Kabir, Musnad Ahmad, Albani called the hadith Hasan in Silsila Sahiha ( 1585 )]
Three: The gates of Paradise are opened in this month, the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are taken as a prisoner: It is narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “ When the month of Ramadaan arrives, open the gates of Paradise. Yes, the gates of hell are closed and the devils are taken, prisoner. [Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim]
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: When the month of Ramadaan arrives, the gates of mercy are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained. [Sunan Nasai, Albani has called the hadith Sahih Jami ‘(471) Sahih]
According to a narration from Sunan Tirmidhi, Sunan Ibn Majah and Sahih Ibn Khuzaimah, “On the first night of Ramadan, the devils and the jinn are captured, the gates of Hell are closed; Not a single door is left open. The gates of Paradise are opened, not a single door is closed. And a caller called out: O benefactor, go ahead. O sinner, go to the difference. Every night of Ramadan, Allah saves many from the fire of Hell. [Albani calls the hadith ‘Hasan’ in Sahihul Jame ‘(659)]
If someone says that we see a lot of bad deeds and sins happening in the month of Ramadan. If the devils had been captured, wouldn’t this have happened?
The answer is: In the case of a person who observes the conditions and manners of fasting, sins are reduced. Or the purpose of the hadith is – some devils are captured. They are the rising devils. Or the purpose of the hadith is to reduce bad deeds. This is a direct matter. Bad deeds in Ramadan are less than other times. And even if all the devils are imprisoned, it is not inevitable that bad deeds or sinful deeds will not happen at all. Because besides Satan, there are other reasons for sin. For example, because of tainted hearts, because of bad habits and because of human-like devils. [Fathul Bari (4/145)].
Four: There is a lot of worship in this month. There are some acts of worship that are not present at other times. Such as: fasting, performing Qiyamul Lail, feeding, i’tikaf, giving charity and reciting the Qur’an.
We pray to Almighty Allah to grant us all Tawfiq, to help us to observe fasting, perform Qiyam, do good deeds and abstain from bad deeds.
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.
